RP 400 Essentials of Distance Education

This course is often the student’s first opportunity to try a distance learning format. It is designed to aid the student through his or her distance education journey. It will help the student know what is expected for distance learning and aid the student in finding the answers needed to accomplish this goal. Finally, this course will prepare the student on how to begin college writing.

HS 453 Anatomy and Physiology

Almost any aspect of health and healing involves some knowledge of what constitutes a healthy body and how it is supposed to work. This course introduces human anatomy and physiology together so that the student can appreciate the close relationship between structure and function. This course begins with basic concepts and the building blocks of life. It explores how these are combined into cells, tissues, organs and systems to achieve specific purposes through organization and metabolism. The course is designed so that the student who successfully masters it can be assured of being well prepared for other courses in the field of health and healing.

HS 450 Biochemistry

This course is based upon a unique text by Stephen Goldberg, M.D. It is designed to make learning biochemistry easy and even enjoyable. This course focuses on the concepts of biochemistry, and practical, clinical applications. This course is designed for all types of holistic practitioners, who will find it full of useful and relevant material about the chemistry of our bodies, and how it relates to health and disease.

HS 451 Introduction to Nutrition

This course provides the student with an in-depth and comprehensive knowledge of basic nutrition. Through the course of study, the student will learn aspects of gastrointestinal nutrition, basic minerals, vitamin and enzyme nutrition, as well as an introduction to the study of amino acids and other pertinent nutrients.

HS 580 Introduction to Pathology

The content of this course consists of a presentation of various disease states with a focus on etiology signs and symptoms, and the pathogenesis of disease.

HS 464 History Taking

This course presents the theoretical and practical aspects of patient history taking. Ancillary diagnostic modalities used in Western medicine will be discussed in order to provide familiarity. Both the art and science of taking a history will be emphasized.

HS 591 Natural Childbirth, Obstetrics, and Related Emergencies

The student will learn the basic knowledge and understanding of the antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum periods of the childbirth process. The perspective presented will be from a midwifery and home birth model of care. Students completing this course will have a foundation with which to begin an apprenticeship if they desire to pursue midwifery. Clinical experience is absolutely necessary to serve as a midwife or childbirth attendant.

HS 592 Digestive Health

Digestive assessment and treatment is the fundamental medicine in naturopathic or nutritional professions. This course is exciting and vital to deepening our understanding of holistic health. Dr. Mayr’s examination techniques for the abdomen and posture give a unique and comprehensive way to augment knowledge of the patient’s overall health. Beyond the basic medical exam and assessment of the abdomen, students learn that the interrelationship between digestive function and postural assessment is profound.

HS 530 Super Nutrition for Women

This course will cover the unique features of female nutrition and how to prevent, control, and manage women’s health conditions such as yeast infections, PMS, osteoporosis, breast cancer, and heart disease.

HS 463 A Naturopathic Approach to Exercise

This course will cover proper techniques of exercise, weight training, aerobic workouts, and optimum nutritional intake. Students will study topics such as the possible risk factors and body improvements from aerobic training, as well as homeopathic remedies for leg, ankle, and foot injuries. Students will complete Weight Training / Aerobic Exercise Logs and Daily Nutrition Intake Logs to analyze these techniques.

BA 516 Legal Guidelines for Unlicensed Practitioners

This course will lead the student beyond simple legal protection to discuss the legal structure of health care. It will include new materials regarding licensing laws and the use of the Ninth Amendment declarations. This course will give the student background knowledge with regard to licensing laws that are aimed at regulating the health care practitioner.

HS 531 Clinical Education & Research Practicum I – l05 contact hours

HS 454 Applied Nutrition / Herbology

This course will provide the student with the basis for understanding nutrition as a therapeutic modality. This course will introduce diet therapy and nutritional supplementation as an adjunct to the student’s primary study of therapeutic modalities. Emphasis will be placed upon those diseases where nutrition is highly effective in prevention, alleviation, or cure of the disease state.

HS 469 Nutritional Herbology

This course provides the student with a nutritional profile for over 106 commonly used herbs and natural foods. These nutritional profiles of herbs provide the basis for analyzing the traditional uses of each herb and the most popular herbal combinations and formulas. Students will learn the history and use of these herbs with the nutritional profile to explain and interpret many historical uses of herbs as foods and medicines. Herbal or Botanical Science is rapidly playing a major role in 21st-century medicine and health care. This course will empower the student with special knowledge about herbs and their nutritional value.

HS 583 Etiology and Pathology

The content of this course will be a presentation of different disease states from a Western medical perspective. The focus will be on the presenting signs and symptoms, etiology, and pathophysiology of each condition.

HS 452 Applied Nutrition

This course provides the student with an intensive study of how nutritional applications can correct specific disorders of the body. Through dietary nutritional programs, the student will learn to counteract deficiencies by utilizing nutrition and diet for optimal health.

HS 590 Acupressure and Kinesiology

This course will serve as an introduction to the basic principles and theories of Applied Kinesiology (AK). Included within the realm of Applied Kinesiology will be an explanation of the principles of acupuncture and acupressure and their incorporation within the concepts of AK. This course will serve as a suitable prerequisite for more advanced studies.

HS 686 Manual Lymph Drainage: Application and Treatments

This course will offer proven and direct techniques of Manual Lymph Draining (MLD) for overall health and cosmetic benefit. The course will cover the history and philosophy of MLD, as discovered by Dr. Emil and Estrid Vodder, through specific treatment guidelines for various ailments.

HS 596 Natural Emergency Medical Care

This course is intended to provide the student with a basic overview of natural emergency medical care by applying emergency medical as well as naturopathic procedures. By using these methods, the extent of an injury or illness will be greatly reduced and, hopefully, lives will be saved. The overall goal of this course is to improve the quality of natural emergency medical care to patients with accidents or illnesses.

HS 457 Nutritional Counseling and Hair Mineral Analysis

A study of the scientific literature regarding minerals and their relation to biochemistry. The student will learn the theoretical concepts involved in the interpretation of the test and clinical observations regarding the use of hair mineral analysis for understanding body chemistry, preventing illness, designing corrective programs, and monitoring progress. The laboratory procedures necessary will be explained.

HS 458 Applied Naturopathic Blood Chemistry and Urine Analysis

This comprehensive course provides the BS and ND students with excellent resources on both conventional and alternative scopes of laboratory chemistries. Through reading and audio study, students learn the use of blood chemistry and urinalysis results in the diagnosis and monitoring of a patient’s health. The course content focuses on the assessment of nutritional status and chronic disease through the use of basic lab tests and presents an in-depth study of acid-alkaline diet theory. This course also teaches how to monitor chronic disease states with up-to-date, scientific lab methods.

HS 585 Reams’ Urine and Saliva Analysis

A common sense approach to nutrition demonstrates how complex issues such as health, life and wellness can be reduced to simple, easy-to-understand, practical ideas and applications. Urine and saliva screening help determine the cause of the loss of energy and which foods and/or supplements should be added to an individual’s diet to fit their exact body chemistry. The factors used for determining the mathematical expression of Dr. Reams’ urine and saliva screening will be elaborated upon.

HS 673 Advanced Therapeutic Body Balancing

The student will be given training in scientific Advanced Body Balancing for many illnesses afflicting humankind. The goal of this course is to teach the specific natural knowledge and expertise to accomplish this objective with techniques and procedures that have been proven naturopathically to bring the body back into balance.

HS 564 Physical Examination

This course presents the theoretical and practical aspects of taking a full medical examination. Both the art and science of information gathering will be emphasized. The student will leave this course with an understanding of the importance of the exam as well as the skills to document the full written report of the patient’s condition.

HS 466 Introduction to Aromatherapy

This course will provide the student with an overall knowledge of the medicinal and therapeutic uses of essential oils through Aromatherapy. The knowledge gained will allow the student to experiment and make adjustments for personal and professional therapeutic applications. As a result, the student will experience a greater appreciation for plant essences in both personal and professional settings.

HS 422 Jurisprudence and Ethics

This course will teach the student how to research the State and Federal laws regulating the practice of medicine and nutrition. This course will help the student establish the difference between a health practice and a medical practice. The student will learn about different types of health practitioners and what constitutes a licensed professional.

HS 459 Fasting and Detoxification: A Holistic Approach

This course provides the student with an in-depth knowledge of fasting and detoxification to restore optimal bodily health. Therapeutic methods will be studied such as the cleansing diet, digestive wellness, juice fasting, and various tissue cleansing procedures.

HS 460 Colon Hygiene and Colon Hydrotherapy

The student will study the significance of colon hygiene in health covering areas such as absorption and assimilation of nutrients, cleansing procedures and detoxification, parasites and other related pathological disorders. Therapeutic programs designed to enhance or alleviate these situations will be examined. This curriculum is dedicated to the training of colon hydrotherapy therapists and to a renewed awareness by the medical and natural healing community as to the importance of colon hygiene.

HS 664 The Narrative Report*

This course is designed to provide the basic infrastructure for organizing and creating a narrative report upon which health care and related professionals can interact. This course presents the theoretical and practical aspects of patient history taking. Ancillary diagnostic modalities used in Western medicine will be discussed in order to provide familiarity. HS 462 Bach Flower Remedies

This course is designed to give a thorough working knowledge of the Bach Flower Remedies. The student will learn the properties of all 38 remedies and how to recognize indications for individual remedies as they manifest in emotions and personality types.

PY 606 Practical Approaches to Common Mental Disorders

The student will learn how to recognize and treat the mental disorders most often encountered in daily clinical work. This course attempts to bridge the gap between cognitive behavioral approaches and ego psychological interpretations. Disorders are seen as emerging out of the individual’s struggle with self and environment. These techniques are not mutually exclusive but are interactive and geared toward creative change and alternatives. The specific disorders covered include depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, eating disorders, substance abuse, post-traumatic stress syndrome, sexual dysfunction, and schizophrenia.

PY 611 Creating Love

This course provides a new way to understand our most crucial relationships: with parents and children, with friends and coworkers, with ourselves, and with God. This course is a comprehensive guide to the healing arts. You will explore the healing arts from ancient Egypt to the latest discoveries in the fields of science and complementary medicine. The student will finish this course with a comprehensive understanding of Alternative Therapies, Complementary Medicine, and the Healing Vocation.

HS 593 Business Development and Administration

The purpose of this course is to teach the student or health practitioner how to effectively operate within his / her community as a professional. It is important to know how to develop a private practice and how to administer your knowledge to clients. This course covers forms, client relations, questionnaires, brochures, advertising, and cooperation with licensed physicians, community acceptance, and awareness.

HM 404 Challenges of Long-Term Illness

The eight identified fears shared by most people that cope with long-term illness are examined. Learning about these fears, and the ways to deal with them, will enable the student to help those with illnesses, loved ones, and caregivers, deal with situations in which they feel powerless. Discover how ancient healing arts, practiced for over 5,000 years, and the latest in complementary medicine, can help fight disease, maintain good health, and promote happiness naturally. The student will become cognizant of the need to assess the concepts of health and illness in order to extend the scope of the healing arts beyond the present medical limits of drugs, radiation, and surgery.

HS 465 Business Practices and Office Management

This course provides a cookbook approach for the new graduate who is about to enter the world of health care as a business. Information is gleaned from the instructor’s experience as a solo practitioner in a one-man home office. Information from this course is equally valuable for the seasoned businessman or brand new practitioner.

HS 555 Clinical Education & Research Practicum V- l05 contact hours

HS 560 Clinical Externship I – 1050 contact hours

Students who have completed their ND phases will conclude their studies with a clinical externship. Students will locate a Natural Health Practitioner in their local area, on their own, or with the assistance of Westbrook University. The preceptor, or Natural Health Practitioner, must be accepted by Westbrook University.

HS 561 Clinical Externship II – 1050 contact hours

This course is an extension of HS 560 and concludes the externship requirement for ND students. Students may choose a different preceptor for this course or continue with their original preceptor. Students will locate a Natural Health Practitioner in their local area, on their own, or with the assistance of Westbrook University. The preceptor, or Natural Health Practitioner, must be accepted by Westbrook University.

HS 703 Introduction to Embryology

Embryology originally dealt with the chronology of changes in the tissues and the general form of the embryo. One of the central themes is the origin of cellular diversity in an individual composed of genetically identical cells. The student will learn the process of formation and development of gametes and cell biology.

HS 706 Homotoxicology

Introduction to the history, philosophy and therapeutic approaches for general to acute cases. Classical and fundamental homeopathy are studied. How homeopathic remedies stimulate the defense system by working against causes of illness that are similar to the corresponding homotoxins.

HS 702 Drug Depletion

This course covers the most common deficiencies of vitamins, minerals, hormones and compounds in the human body. The student will learn the US Department of Agriculture Nutritional Standards and the Recommended Daily Allowances (RDA).

HS 700 Allergies

Allergies can be treated by many means. This course focuses on Homeopathic remedies. Homeopathic treatments promote health and harmony on all levels within a human being via principles of harmonic resonance and the law of similars.

HS 707 Hormone Replacement Therapy

Hormone replacement has been very controversial in the last ten years. This course will explore the history and current modalities used. Women’s health issues and concerns will be covered.

HS 708 Lymphology

Lymphology is the study of the lymph system and how it works and correlates to the body and function.

HS 710 PMS

PMS- Pre or Post Menstrual Syndrome

HS 714 Chinese Medicine

This course will explore the ideas behind Chinese medicine- the basic principles and the Yin and Yang.

HS 715 Dental Issues

The course will cover how the health of your teeth and gums affect your health. The student will learn dentistry for the new millennium with whole body dentistry. The philosophy behind this treatment plan and the benefits.

HS 704 Fibromyalgia

Provides an understanding of metabolic imbalances that occur with Fibromyalgia. Current research, laboratory analysis and clinical applications utilizing homeopathy nutraceuticals, botanicals and lifestyle changes. Also, current conventional treatments and why they do not work.

HS 720 Soft Tissue Hard Tissue

The course covers the difference between hard tissue and soft tissue of the body. Learning the difference is essential in the examination process, for diagnosis, ordering tests and ruling out possible conditions.

HS 721 Thyroid

This course will cover the placement, function and role of the thyroid gland; the effects this gland has on the dogy and other organs; what happens when the thyroid is injured damaged, or diseased; and how to protect the thyroid and maintain a healthy thyroid gland.

The course deals with the issues, concerns and illnesses of the older patient. And treating the geriatric patient using goals and outcomes.

HS 724 Immunology

Immunology is a course that details the function and disorders of the Immune System.

HS 726 Pain

This course covers the clinical traits and findings of different kinds of pain, treatment plans and therapeutic approaches. Also the causes and types of pain will be discussed. It will cover the metabolics of pain, receptors, nerves and consciousness.

HS 727 Pediatrics

This course is on Pediatric Medicine. It will cover smart medicine for the healthier child and alternative health modalities to ensure the health and well-being of the child.

HS 728 Reproductive Female

This course will cover the gynecological health of women. Topics include female anatomy, menstrual cycles, pregnancy, menopause, disease and the role of hormones.

HS 729 Sexual Dysfunction

This course will examine the cause, origin and treatment plans for this condition. Social and economic factors will be reviewed for consideration in creating a regime of care. The most common conditions and history plans will be discussed.

HS 730 Urology

This course is the study of Urology. Age gender, disease, injury and protocols will be discussed. The student will discover the most common ailments, disorders and conditions associated with the urinary tract. Treatment plans, common and uncommon and how alternative healing methods play a role.

HS 731 Dermatology

This Dermatology course will cover disease, inflammation, bug bites, injury and disease to the derma. Cellular composition both visually and microscopically will be reviewed. The most common conditions and treatment plans will be discussed and how the immune and vascular systems play a role in dermal health.

HS 733 Neurology

This course will cover the major nervous system, function and anatomy. The student will learn the most common conditions, diseases and treatment protocols today. Homeopathic remedies will be studied with a focus on neurological components.

HS 735 Opthalmology

This course on Opthalmology will explore the science of vision and the anatomy of the eye; different approaches to vision health from eastern to western medicine; and the role of nutrition and environmental issues.

HS 736 Reproductive Male

This course will avail the student of the male anatomy, genital health and prevention. An overview of the self-examination and annual physical examination by a practitioner, and the keys to nutrition for male health.
